Am I a member of the Students’ Union?

Every full-time registered student in the college is automatically becomes a member of the Students’ Union. With thousands of members we have a very strong voice hear on campus. It is the Students’ Union main aim to represent each and every one of our members to the full extent of our abilities. We are also affiliated to the Union of Students in Ireland (USI), which makes you an automatic member of this 250,000 strong Union. USI is the sole national representative body for students in Ireland and works on insuring that student voices are heard on various national bodies and committees.

Why do we need a Students’ Union?

The Students’ Union provides representation for students, to the college authorities and at local level. The SU ensures no student’s voice goes unheard; think of the Union as an amplification device for your point of view.

Who is in the Union?

You, the students are the most element of the Union. The Students’ Union needs the support of its members to be effective, and we are looking forward this year to being a powerful Union. Every member who shows an interest in the Union and takes part increases the scope of what can be done. The Union is a force to be reckoned with when it is seen to be supported by its members.

What can the Union do for me?

The Union is the first line of defence for it’s 6,000 plus members; if you have a problem then we’re here to help. Just knowing that you have the strength of an organisation that is over 6,000 members strong behind you is comforting on its own, but just in case you want some examples of when we may be able to help; disputes between you and your landlord, the college authorities, local residents etc.

How can I get involved?

Depending on how long-term your goals are, you can go for election as a sabbatical officer, run for a post on the students executive, get on one of the various committees or get elected as a Class Representative.

You can also get involved in a more general be attending the various meetings organised by th Union throughout the year, such as the AGM, hustings etc. or by becoming part of the entertainments teams set up during the year for various events.
